A hat with a tune

Sunday, March 2, 2014

I have bought a "new" old hat. I found it at the evening I went to the opening evening at A. Marchesan and Tidens melodis (loosely translated to the tune of the times) pop up shop! I was graciously invited by the owner Ann who usually resides in Karlstad but for a short while moved her shop to Stockholm and A. Marchesan. When all lovely vintage gals where searching through the offerings I found myself to be a bit shy. Suddenly I saw this hat on one of the shelfs and it was love at first sight. Simple, elegant, with a lovely shimmer and a pearly, sparkly detail, simply adorable.
Since then I've realized that I'm probably wearing it backwards with the bow in the front instead of the back, but who cares? Isn't it pretty this way?

If you're ever close by Karlstad you really have to swing by Tidens Melodi. Ann's selection of vintage clothes, hats, shoes and accessories is impeccable and very well priced! You can also buy yourself a cup of ecological java and/or a homemade pastry while your shopping!

(I also bought some other beautiful treasures at her pop up shop which I will share with you in time.)

Vintage outfit styled by me
Photography by the lovely Åsa Edling

So, I think I will start blogging again. I stopped due to lack of inspiration but lately I have been thinking about picking this up again. I just think that I will have to stop being so over critical on myself. It's never good enough, and could always be better. But it is what it is, my vintage diary. For those of you who still hang around here from time to time, thank you! And for any new readers, you are marvelously welcome!

Versailles, oh Versailles..

Let me show you a part of my hometown in a colourful fashion!

Outfit details:
Lipstick: Chanel, "Monte Carlo"
Vintage japanese soft pink 70's pussy bow blouse: Standard vintage
Powder pink angora cardigan: Sale find
Heavy blue/green and golden ring: Birthday present from Anna
Parrot print skirt: H&M
Bright green stockings: Oroblu
Light brown brouges: Vagabond

I was so tired of the cold one day that I thought I would try to dress the winter away. And I was actually going to shoot these photos at the tropical garden (wich is very close to where I live) but it was closed so that will have to wait for another time!

Instead I chose to show you a little part of the botanical gardens that are so typical for Uppsala. It was founded by Carl von Linné (1707-1778) who was a swedish botanist and who was one of the greatest in his time. He was pioneering in categorizing plants and animals and has left a big mark on Uppsala where he worked as a professor and also founded gardens for study and collecting.
Well, now you can see his name on basically everything from candy to cafées and furniture here in Uppsala. A couple of years ago we had a jubilée of some sort and you could run into local actors portraying Linné and his gang all over town.
So, I may not be so fascinated with him or with some of his work but I do love to visit the gardens during every season of the year. When you live in the city there is not many places to relax and this is one of mine. In summer time I go here with some picnic-food to sunbathe and read a book, in autumn I visit the small fairs they have where farmers sell their locally and ecologically produced commodities, In spring you can see the snow melt away and the first little flowers appearing and in winter, well, in winter most of it is covered in snow.
The cold and white snow gives the gardens a harder and more rough edge where the big stones covered in moss, the red metallic sculpture and the high and dense winter trees takes center stage. In some sense it's quite saddening but the feeling of everything resting under the covering snow and how all that energy will start to evolve when the sun returns with spring still gives it a sense of hope.
With that in mind I thought I would wear my beloved parrotskirt and one of my more colourful outfits, just to remind myself that spring is coming, soon.

Ps! If you want to see how the gardens look in summertime, check out this post that I did this summer!

Ordinary winters day

Tuesday, January 29, 2013

So, for the past week I have been sick. And let me tell ya, it's quite boring! At first I tried to do some small stuff around the apartment, like cleaning it up a bit. But no, my energy reserve has been down to zero so the only thing I've had the energy to do is lying in my bed and watch things on my new computer. At the moment I'm starting to get a little bit better but I will stay home a little while longer just to make sure that I'm healthy. The worst thing I know is being a little bit sick for weeks. And that tends to happen to me when I don't listen to my body and start working to early. Guess I have to be bored for a while longer.

Any who, thought I would share these photos with you guys. These were taken on one of the coldest winter days a couple of weeks ago and I'm actually wearing double (!) cardigans underneath. And it was still a bit too cold..This is how I tend to look on an average day right now. Due to the cold I always wear my doc's (which have the perfect sole for cold weather! I think the sole is very important since much of the cold comes from what you are standing on, speaking as a swede with family ties in the far north, hrm hrm.), my beret, and on top of that my handmade scarf that I love and got as a birthday gift when I turned 24, it's super warm!

As you might guess it is quite hard to be creative with what you wear since the weather isn't really cooperating with me. I even have to wear super warm pieces underneath or I would freeze to ice.
I'm really missing spring and I really want it to arrive soon!

Peacocks stays inside when it's winter

Outfit details:
Vintage 50's snowflake shaped earclips: Mae Jean Vintage
Red lipstick: "Stunning matte", Face
Vintage 70's blouse with peacock print: Standard Vintage
Vintage black 50's cigarette pants: thrifted

So, over here it's freezing cold! That's why I haven't posted any outfit posts in a while. It's so cold that even if I think its boring I tend to go for my warmest winter jacket from Filippa K and early in the morning I even wear my super warm pants that actually are made for skiing. Off course I try to wear some more interesting stuff underneath but it's so cold that I can't wear stockings and if I'm honest my pants collection isn't very big. It was years since I wore a par of jeans!
On top of it all it's also pitch black. Right now it's six o'clock and it looks like the middle of the night outside. You would think that I should be use to this (being born and raised in Sweden and with family ties to the far north) but every year I long for summer.

To survive the cold I tend to find small projects for myself to do inside. I recently finished off this lamp by buying three different coloured lampshades. I've been framing some pictures, playing my ukulele (ironically), making videoclips, painting my nails, drawing, drinking huge amounts of tea, contemplating making my own three day truffles, playing with my hair and so on and so on.

But finally I had to dress up and venture out to a party since my dear friend Sara is back from Chili (wrote a post about it here) and I thought I'd share my outfit with you! This blouse is one of my favorite pieces since it's so light, comfortable, classic and a still bit different with the peacock print and collar. But I still had to wear my warmest jacket, a big hand stitched scarf and warm leather gloves on my way to the party, just so I wouldn't freeze into an ice sculpture on my way there!

Hello lovers!

These photos were taken quickly at the amazing university building in central Uppsala. the weather was very windy so my hair was a bit messy. But I still like the tranquility of the place! Unfortunately I didn't have that much time so I only managed to take these snap shots, but I've got some wonderful dresses coming in so I might have to revisit this place with my camera!

The university in Uppsala is very old and is one of the things that the town is known for. I think that you can say that it was founded in year 1477 and that it is the oldest university in the Scandinavia region. This building is an amazing display of neoclassicism and I remember how I could feel the wings of time there when I started studying arthistory. Isn't one of the magic wonders with architecture how it can make you reflect over your position in history and time? The campus is actually bigger than this building so for the most part, or almost always, I had my lectures in a more modern local closer to my home. But the university house is the center of it all and every semester new students are welcomed in through a big ceremony in the auditorium and it's also here that you get your doctors degree.

Well, otherwise I'm working a lot (as always) and because I just love having to much to do I will have my second club now in December and I also agreed to be the producer of a big show on the Regina theater this spring. Besides that I also have to finish my chemistry course and apply for the restorer school in Göteborg. So, I'm sorry that I sometimes update very sporadically but for the time being that's the way it is. I have an ambition of posting several times a week but when life intervenes there's not much I can do. I'm still very thankful for my readers and I really love reading your comments!

(I am much better at posting on Instagram, where my name is simonastreet, if you want to follow me there!)

Flamingo hat

Flamingo hat: H&M Unicef collection
Vintage 50's dress: Dear Golden
Vintage silver owl brooch: Birthday present from Jonna

I found this hat at H&M about a month ago and thought it was marvelous! It also had a matching dress, but since I'm not 10, it wouldn't fit me. Too bad! They had about 4-5 different fun hats to choose from and since it also was a collaboration with Unicef, some of the money went to charity. Well, the hat followed me home and I'm keeping it in my collection of masquerade clothes!

This week I have been relaxing and taking it slow in the sofa. Sometimes you just need that time to unwind so that you can come back with more energy then before! I'm very good at planning to much stuff into my days and agreeing to everything I think sounds fun. If I don't have a project going on I become very restless..That's why it is so important for me to sometimes slow things down. Some really boring time in the sofa will give you the energy you need for all the fun projects you can do!

This weekend I'm working but hopefully I will be able to take a turn through IKEA and buy that bedframe I've been wanting for so long! So when I'm busy at work, take som time, relax and don't be afraid of being boring for a little while!

Ps! Did you know that the awesome vintage shop Dear Golden is having a 25% off Holiday sale right now? All that prettyness i's killing me!

Let me show you a part of my hometown in a 60's fashion!

Outfit details:
orange, purple and pink silk scarf: Birthday present from Malin
small black cat earrings: Faz Jewelery
lipstick: Chanel, "Monte carlo"
vintage multi coloured 60's mods coat: Milk teeths
vintage Japanese 70's pussy bow blouse: Standard Vintage
nailpolish: Essie, "Chinchilly"
black lace miniskirt: H&M
high heeled black suede shoes: Din Sko

These pictures were taken at the "The house of music" in Uppsala. It's a concert hall in the middle of the city that was very debated when it was planned and built. Some people thought that the modern architecture would stick out as a soar thumb in between the older buildings, others thought that the proximity to Stockholm made this building useless and some thought that the building was a great way of growing Uppsala's city center. I didn't really care about this debate and I do like the building, mostly for it's amazing view over some of Uppsala's highlights like the castle and the old cathedral. But as always we are a bit moderate in Sweden, if it was up to me, the exterior (who is now light grey and black) would make as much of a statement as the interior. Isn't the red colored escalator and floors fun?

Also, just had to show you this amazing coat and super cute pussy bow blouse! These two pieces just goes together perfectly and I've been thinking about shooting them both for a while. The coat is actually one of my birthday presents from Erik that he bought (through me) from the lovely Ashley at Milk teeths of course! I first saw this coat on her blog (where she styled it with mustard yellow stockings, very cute!) and I couldn't believe that it was for sale. So I quickly sent Ashley a message to reserve it and after showing it to Erik it was mine. Well, it is actually a little bit too cold to wear it right now but with a cozy cardigan underneath I braved the cold and managed to take a twirl around town in it yesterday!
The blouse is from one of my new favourite shop's on Etsy: Standard Vintage! And I am a little bit hesitant to share it with you since I don't want to miss out on all the beautiful pieces myself. But I can't keep a good shop to myself, cuz' there's nothing as fun as sharing and this shop is really great, so go and check it out!

And, thought I share a bonus picture of me just hanging out at "the house of music"!
